“Today the making of a portrait is as great a mystery to me as it was when I was first a student. And I always approach it with fear and trembling. With me, it is largely a matter of getting en rapport with the subject and I believe in inspiration, a word that would be taboo with up-to-date teachers… No doubt what I say about portraits is vague and mystical. It is hard for me to explain what I mean. But to me the painting of a great portrait is something like the observation of a religious rite.”

Glen Cooper Henshaw
